Ditron has been running short-term rental units in Chicago since 2020 under his brand Roam to Rome Spaces. Like most STR hosts in buildings with callboxes, guest access was a constant friction point.

He started with a product called Lowkey Buzzer, but it wasn't built for the short-term rental market. It lacked the calendar sync, per-booking code logic, and reservation awareness that STR hosts actually need. So he built his own version, using Twilio for the phone infrastructure and Hospitable's API for reservation data. It worked well for several years across his own portfolio.

Eventually he decided to turn it into a real product — not a side project, but something built with the full weight of operator experience behind it.

The difference between Chimekey and its competitors isn't the technology. It's the perspective. Most callbox automation products are built by engineers for customers. Chimekey was built by a short-term rental investor who used it himself, for operators who need something that actually understands how STR businesses work.
