Chimekey vs FreshBuzzer

FreshBuzzer and Chimekey both offer iCal sync and automated access codes for short-term rental hosts. They differ significantly on pricing, call forwarding approach, and the depth of their integration ecosystems.

How each product works

FreshBuzzer is primarily a call-forwarding tool that adds access code automation on top. Your callbox continues to dial a number -- FreshBuzzer's number -- and the system either forwards the call to one of your registered phones (up to five, reached simultaneously or in sequence) or automatically opens the door if the visitor enters a valid access code. This gives you flexibility: the host or a co-host can still answer calls manually when needed.

Chimekey does not offer call forwarding. It is built on the premise that the system handles every callbox interaction end-to-end without human involvement. When a guest arrives, the system answers, prompts for a code, and opens the door. You are not in the loop unless something goes wrong. The design trades flexibility for reliability -- you cannot accidentally miss a call and leave a guest outside.

Booking platform integrations

FreshBuzzer syncs access codes with Airbnb and other platforms via iCal, and supports Hostify through that same calendar sync. When a booking is added or cancelled, the associated access code is created or removed. This covers the core automation loop for most hosts.

Chimekey supports Airbnb, VRBO, and Booking.com via iCal, plus Hospitable via direct API for real-time sync that does not depend on the two-hour iCal refresh cycle. If a reservation is cancelled on Hospitable, the code is deactivated within seconds rather than waiting for the next calendar pull.

Smart lock sync

FreshBuzzer currently supports smart lock synchronization -- the same access code used at the callbox can be programmed onto a compatible smart lock on the unit door. This is a meaningful advantage for hosts who want a single code covering both the building entrance and the apartment.

Chimekey's smart lock integration is in development via the Seam platform, which supports August, Yale, Schlage, Kwikset, and other major brands. Until that feature ships, Chimekey handles the callbox side while hosts manage the unit lock separately. See the integrations page for the current status.

Compatible callbox systems

FreshBuzzer does not specify compatible callbox brands. It works with intercoms that can be configured to dial an external phone number, but does not publish a verified compatibility list.

Chimekey publishes a verified list of compatible brands: DoorKing, Linear, Mircom, Aiphone, Viking, Fermax, and Comelit. If you are not sure whether your building's system is covered, you can ask about compatibility before signing up.

Pricing comparison

FreshBuzzer is priced under $3 per month -- one of the most affordable options in this category. A free tier is available for testing without a paid phone number. For individual hosts with one or two properties who want basic automation at the lowest possible cost, FreshBuzzer is hard to beat on price.

Chimekey is priced at $10 per unit per month on the Host plan, or $15 per unit per month on Superhost (with Slack alerts, webhooks, and team seats included). It is more expensive than FreshBuzzer, and that difference reflects the focus on multi-unit operators and deeper integration infrastructure.

Team and notification features

FreshBuzzer supports up to five registered phone numbers that receive forwarded callbox calls. This is a lightweight form of team access -- multiple people can be reached when a visitor calls -- but it is not the same as role-based user management.

Chimekey's Superhost plan includes five individual team seats with separate logins and role-based permissions. Access events are pushed to Slack in real time, and every event can be forwarded to an external system via signed webhooks. For operators who want their access data flowing into their own tools, this is the key differentiator.

Which should you choose?

FreshBuzzer is the stronger choice if you want the lowest possible monthly cost, if call forwarding to multiple phones is important to your workflow, or if smart lock sync (with a unit lock that supports it) is a current priority rather than a future one.

Chimekey is the better fit if you manage multiple units across buildings, need Slack or webhook integrations for your operations stack, or want direct API sync with Hospitable rather than waiting on iCal refresh cycles. It is built for STR operators running a real portfolio, not just automating a single unit.
