How each product works
Protobuzz is built on VoIP technology and is designed around flexible automation rules. You define conditions -- a time window, a passcode, an access count limit -- and the system opens the door when those conditions are met. The Premium plan adds Google Calendar sync so that access rules can be tied to calendar events. It is flexible enough for condo boards, roommate coordination, and delivery management, not just short-term rentals.
Chimekey is narrower in scope and specifically designed for STR operators. Rather than general-purpose automation rules, it reads your Airbnb or VRBO reservation calendar and automatically generates a unique 4-digit code per booking. The code activates at check-in and expires at checkout. When a booking is cancelled, the code is deactivated immediately. There are no rules to configure and no manual steps once setup is complete.
Booking platform integrations
Protobuzz's Google Calendar sync (Premium plan) can be used to connect Airbnb reservations indirectly -- Airbnb allows you to export your reservation calendar to Google Calendar, and Protobuzz can read events from there. It works, but it requires an extra step and relies on Google Calendar as an intermediary. Airbnb, VRBO, and Booking.com are not connected directly.
Chimekey connects directly to Airbnb, VRBO, and Booking.com via iCal. If you use Hospitable as your PMS, the sync is direct via API and updates in real time rather than waiting on a calendar refresh. The connection is built specifically for short-term rental use cases, not adapted from general calendar sync.
